Godspeed Miep Gies

I know that Miep Gies never thought of herself as a hero but in my mind she truly was because she faced great personal danger daily watching over the Frank family while they were in hiding. It is the small daily acts of courage as well as the big dramatic ones that make a hero. Thank God that the Netherlands was full of heros like Miep Gies. Because of them many lives were saved and a country survived a horrible war and occupation. Thank God we have Miep Gies and others like her as an example of what to do during terrible times. Do we turn people in to save ourselves or do we save ourselves by saving others? During the occupation people were starving and often turned in family, friends and neighbors just to get food for the day. The person who turned in the Frank family may have done so simply to survive. How remarkable that Otto Frank seemed to realize this and refrained from bringing shame on the man and his family. It would behoove us all to reflect on which path we would choose in similar circumstances. Go with God, Miep Gies and thank you for your shining example of a noble path.
